R.I.P. Eileen Flynn. Thankfully we’ve come a long way from the kind of misogynistic religious stranglehold that thought it was ok to deprive a woman with a young family of her income because she wasn’t married. Sadly, this only happened in 1982, not 1962. Good ol’ Ireland and its sexist, backward moralism….

In many ways, she was Irelands answer to Rosa Parks, particularly in the sense that she never sought to be an example, she just wanted to live her life in the manner she chose without causing harm to those around her.
RIP indeed.
1982. It’s hard to believe, isn’t it? This country is such an embarrassment at times.

Biggest eye-opener of my life. There I was, about to sit my leaving cert, and who appeared on the 6 o’clock news? There she was, the head nun of my school, standing alongside another nun who was reading a statement to the press about “morals” and “standards”?
So, the woman who had lectured us for years about decency and Christianity and morality was also prepared to give her support to her religous order and support it while an employee who had a baby out of wedlock got the sack?
There’s a football term for when a manager is past it – he “loses the dressing room”. Well that nun lost her school that day. Nobody had any respect for her after that. Oh we were polite, and we did what we had to do, but we saw her and her order for what they were after that news broadcast.
Eileen Flynn may have lost that particular battle, but she won the war. And she won it for the rest of us. RIP.
Thank you for your very kind words about Eileen,my mam. We were all deeply shocked and saddened last Tues night when she just dropped dead suddenly. Eileen has left a massive legacy in New Ross,as all the teachers, parents and children she’s taught the last 8 years will testify to!!!!!
She had been very unfairly treated by the ”powers that be”,two faced hypocrites that would later be exposed for all to see!!!!!!
We had a pervert priest Fr. Fortune, raping young boys from a local parish. He destroyed so many lives, and what does the church do?!?! Put him in a house on the same street as our two primary schools, several hundred children passing by his door everyday!!!! He ended up doing the decent thing,it just meant he was a coward!!!
The only time they can fill a church these days is for a funeral, the last mark of respect in a institution that has lost and abused of all its respect!!!!
,
Love and miss you so dearly Eileen,
l owe you so much R.I.P.
Eileen will always be remembered at a national level for her courage in taking on the Catholic Church and helping to start breaking down the walls of silence surrounding it. She certainly played a significant part in the modernisation of a country dominated by backward thinking hypocrites.
For those of us from Ross especially the regulars in Richies she’ll be remembered for many other things. I can’t believe she won’t be behind the bar when I go back. I hope there has been a fitting session for a woman who has left an important legacy.
All my condolences to Richie, Regina, Rebecca, Pat, Richard and Diarmud.
RIP Eileen.
